All of its study programs have been harmonized with the principles of the Bologna Declaration, with the aim to make the University of Belgrade a part of the Common European Education Area, with an emphasis on mobility of students and staff.

Foreign students are also given an opportunity to take an intensive Serbian language course in case they choose to enroll in a study program taught in the Serbian language at the UB - Faculty of Philology Center for Serbian as a Foreign Language.

Furthermore, Belgrade is an exceptionally vibrant and outspoken city, with a reputation of a regional hot-spot of culture, entertainment and nightlife. Belgrade’s large expat community, ranging from students to business and industry professionals, makes much of the city’s content inclusive for English speaking visitors. Belgrade’s geographical proximity to prestigious university centers of the neighboring countries (1h 30m flight to Athens and Rome, 1h 10m flight to Vienna and Bucharest, 300 km to Budapest) as well as affordable cost of living additionally makes it an excellent spot for young people to gain high-quality education while living in a dynamic European metropolis.

The University of Belgrade is the oldest university in Serbia, founded back in 1808. Today, it is a research-intensive university, and one of the largest and globally best ranked universities in the SEE and Mediterranean region.

It is a comprehensive university, comprised of 31 faculties and 11 research institutes, with an extensive offer of programs and degrees: more than 370 study programs covering all areas of engineering, natural sciences, medical sciences, social sciences and humanities in all study levels, including professional specializations and integrated master degrees. The University offers a wide variety of study programs in English. All study programs at the University of Belgrade have been harmonized with the principles of the Bologna Declaration. As of 2019, the University of Belgrade participates in Erasmus+ as a HEI from a program country.

The University of Belgrade has a long tradition in academic exchange and has so far built an extensive cooperation with numerous HEIs around the globe in the field of scientific research, within numerous international educational and research programs.

For several years in a row, the University of Belgrade has held high placement at global academic ranking lists as best national university on every major ranking list. Since 2013, the University of Belgrade has been continuously ranked among the world’s top universities at possibly the most prestigious global ranking list published by Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as Shanghai Ranking.

In certain fields the University of Belgrade ranks among the very top world universities. In the latest Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, University of Belgrade is ranked between 51st and 75th place in the world on Food Science and Technology.

UB is ranked number 193 in the latest CWTS Leiden world university rankings on scientific impact indicator.

Courses offered for the Circle U. mobility

Language of instruction: Serbian and English

Most of the study programs offered at the University of Belgrade are taught in Serbian. However, the University also offers a variety of study programs in English.

Students who choose Serbian-taught programs should demonstrate ability to understand and follow the academic content. The Center for Serbian as a Foreign Language offers preparatory courses.

Language learning

The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language, at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade offers a regular one-year intensive course, as well as an intensive three-week summer course and 12-week online beginners’ course. In the regular and summer course, classes are held five days a week (three academic hours per day) and the course is divided into three levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced, since many students already know some Serbian.

Application procedure in brief:

Bilateral agreements – application documents are sent by the International Office of the partner university via email to the designated emails listed in the Contacts section. Documents: Nomination Letter, Recommendation Letter, Transcript of Records/ Study Plan (PhD students), Motivation Letter, CV, Copy of Passport, Learning Agreement

Erasmus+ applicants – Documents are uploaded to the Mobion online mobility platform, directly by the applicants, only if they have been previously nominated in an email by their respective International or Erasmus offices, to the designated emails listed in the Contacts sections.

How to apply for mobility at the University of Belgrade

Incoming student mobility – Nomination and Application

The University of Belgrade offers mobility for foreign students and staff throughout several programs. The programs for which Circle U. students and staff are eligible to take part in are the following:

  • Erasmus+
  • Bilateral (i.e. university-wide) agreements
  1. Apply at your home university
    Incoming candidate (student or staff) interested in mobility at the University of Belgrade applies at their home university, following their internal application procedure and calendar.
  2. Your university selects and nominates you to the designated emails in the Contact section below.
  3. Required documents
    Make sure that you include the following documents into your application:
    • Candidate’s relevant CV with a photo
    • For PhD students: general work/research plan
    • For all students: Preliminary Learning Agreement
    • Transcript of records
    • Any other information or document, required within the specific mobility program.

  4. After nomination is made, depending on the chosen exchange program, a candidate will be asked to either register online via the "MobiOn" platform in order to be able to access the application form and submit the requested documents (Erasmus+ mobility), or submit the required documents via email to the designated contact at the International Office.

**The candidate must select a specific Faculty/School of the University of Belgrade that corresponds to the candidate’s major study area at his/her home university. Students are required to select from a list of courses taught at the University of Belgrade and to include the preferred courses in the preliminary Learning Agreement, as a part of their application. The list of International Academic Coordinators at specific faculties/schools of the University of Belgrade that can help you with filling out the Learning Agreement and selecting relevant courses at the specific UB faculty/school is available here.

Important: Please note that those applications received or sent in any way, depending on the exchange program, will not be accepted. Official nomination from the candidate’s home university and subsequent application by the nominated candidate, followed by the official acceptance of the candidate to the UB faculty in question, are mandatory prerequisites for a mobility to take place.

Calls for Application: The University of Belgrade opens calls for individual mobility twice a year, for mobility starting in the fall or the spring semester.

Nomination and Application under the bilateral exchange (inter-university agreements): Applications for bilateral exchange are sent to the email address of the relevant exchange coordinator at the University of Belgrade, whereas outgoing exchange students and staff are nominated according to the respective foreign partners’ nominations and applications procedures.

Students, who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree-seeking program at another university, should have completed at least one full year of studies by the time of application for exchange.
