ERIA WP 3: Involving Citizens and Society in research and innovation

As universities who have shaped society through centuries, we are dedicated to continue building strong bridges with citizens and continue fully anchoring our universities within society.

Activities of the WP

5. "Democracy in Schools" Initiative in the Knowledge Hub on "Democracy"

Researchers from Circle U. will shape a program on the perception of “Democracy” by the European youth, with reference to different European experiences. The programme will be shape in link with schools in the network of Circle U. universities.

The University of Oslo has extensive experience in designing and leading research projects in schools – an expertise they will use to lead the thematic Pilot Action “Democracy in Schools”.

6. Training Programme for Practitioners on Climate Change in the Knowledge Hub on "Climate"

We are planning a training programme on climate change that is specifically targeted at non-academics, such as, for example, industry leaders, activists, governmental actors, academics, journalists, etc. In this program, in a life-long learning perspective, researchers will design courses to give insights into key points of climate change, and into possibilities of mitigating these by concrete measures.

Humboldt Universität will take the lead in this initiative, building on their expertise in climate change research and outreach.

7. Public Interactive Lecture Series on Global Health in the Knowledge Hub on "Global Health"

Interactives and accessible to the general public, these lectures will involve researchers from Circle U. universities as well as external stakeholders such as the private/ public sector or hospitals, associated partners and Circle U. students.

University of Belgrade will coordinate the thematic Pilot Action on Global Health drawing on the strong involvement of its health researchers in the Advisory Board set up in the drafting phase of the project and the expertise of its researchers in health literacy.

8. Analysing the effectivity and impact of the three thematic Pilot Actions in engaging citizens and society in research and innovation ("research on research" approach)

A post-doctoral researcher hosted at King's College London (the same person as for Activity 4) will document the ongoing processes within the above-mentioned thematic Pilot Actions, highlighting their processes and outcomes so as to inspire other institutions and stakeholders. The study will assess the Pilot Actions, capitalise on them and expand on challenges and good practices in engaging citizens in science. It will be made freely available to interested parties.

Humboldt Universität coordinates ERIA WP3

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will coordinate WP3, drawing on its expertise in engaging citizens and the public through, for example, the newly created Berlin Science Campus and the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science or the Humboldt Forum where academics and the public can intersect.
